I really hope someone out there knows what kind of bird built this nest 30 inches from the ground in a small stand of pines near a cow pasture in zone 8/7.
And I really hope the birdie comes back!
“God wills but ill,” the doubter said,
“Lo, time doth evil only bear;
Give me a sign His love to prove,
His vaunted goodness to declare!”
The poet pointed where a flower,
A simple daisy, starred the sod,
And answered, “Proof of love and power
Behold, behold a smile of God!”

Launch of another winter scene, here:

As you can see from the surrounding area, this is not snow, but hoarfrost.
So beautiful.
And the bush is a perilla that grew from seeds I threw away.
Joke’s on me.
And the bush smells wonderfully lovely, like licorice, at all times, even when it is dried up for fall/winter.
Ever seen the sunlight shining through snow? Backlit snow? Glowing?
Look here:

As the weak winter sun begins its morning round, the snow softens, the webwork sags and becomes visible and then backlit.
Rare. A little like a church-goer who really knows the Christ.
Now look at this beauty:

Amazing how a just a bit of frost on the black and the white lace can make all things different. A little like . . .
I am not sure what this phenomenon is called, but it is winter weather and it is beautiful.
The nearest I can describe it is that a heavy frost was forming on a breezy morning and the results were that the frost formed only on the sides of slender things, such as twigs and wires.

Except that actually, it was a sort of foggy morning, so perhaps the fog was freezing on the sides of things, in gorgeous crystals that extended like pennants from twigs. I don’t know.
Some of you northerners help me out, here.
Anyway, I have a photo; it happened.
Then when the breeze picked up enough to sway branches, the frost began falling off, tinkling like the tiniest bells, falling over the ground in glittery shards in the sunlight.
It was a most awesome morning.
I’ll never forget it.

I warned you I’d make this challenge say “winter”!
This is one of my favorite winter shots. And I have lots of ’em.
It shows a depth that hints at obstacles between me and the horizon and beckons me to long for the other side.
Crossing that cold divide, though, would require waiting for summer and knowing how to swim. Or it would require accessing a boat. Or crossing barbed wire fences not visible.
This peaceful obstacle between me and the future makes me say, “Oh, how lovely, the present!”
I have waited and waited. And I’m not a good waiter. So I said to myself, “The next photo challenge will be winter, if I can possibly make it fit the theme.” I did it. These shots will show between, if I have to rewrite the dictionary.

This first one shows daffs waiting to bloom, between winter and spring.
In case you wondered, winter is my favorite season. They say I would change my mind if I lived more northerly, where winter is more constant, but I think some of the people who live with snow all the time still love winter, and I think I would be one of them, if it ever came to that.
