Do You Object to Purity?

Pure water waterfalls...(Explored)

What in the World?!

People object to the idea of purity.

Objecting to purity is the main reason people reject the Bible and declare it irrelevant.

Why?

They don’t want to be pure.

They want to do what they want.

And This Matters Because…?

A lack of purity in those around us causes many of our problems.

Failures in the realm of purity cause the following:

  1. STDs and AIDS
  2. Prostitution
  3. Divorce
  4. Rape, often in conjunction with murder
  5. Kidnapping
  6. Child slavery
  7. Pornography
  8. et plus

Look at Ms Smiley and shudder. (Okay, well, don’t…)

Can You Allow God an Opinion?

God wants what is best for us and what will give us the greatest fulfillment in life. Therefore, the Bible provides strong teaching against sex outside marriage, and marriage being between a man and woman.

Where at one time (a brief time as history goes), having sexual relations outside of marriage (impurity) was considered liberating, current studies show that it:

  1. damages one’s ability to trust
  2. wounds future relationships
  3. destroys one’s respect for self
  4. diminishes the ability to make right decisions
  5. lowers one’s respect for health
  6. points to the end of a culture.

So God is Fun?

The Bible is relevant concerning the building of a strong, supportive, fulfilling, family life–building fun.

Fun, good childhood memories, not tragic memories.

The Bible is relevant for entering into the most important human relationship of choice, a lifelong spouse, with the ability to commit fully, and much more deeply than you have ever committed to another person in your life.

Fun, good relationships, not guilt-bound relationships.

Loyalty.

Prosperity.

Health.

Joy.

Purity before and during marriage is now known to be a crucial part of that.

And it’s something many will miss out on because they deemed the Bible irrelevant to themselves.

So, Why Haven’t We Heard of This Research?

Super Smart How-To…

…IN ONE TRICK:

  1. Break free from slavery to the exact moment the dryer stops…
  2. Make clothing last longer, and stay cleaner longer, and be easier to clean next time…
  3. Save money and the environment…
  4. Keep your husband looking super all day long…
  5. Keep your wall from disintegrating due to spray starch overspray…

It’s just not so difficult. REALLY. You CAN do this!

Half load of laundry to be starched.
Half load of laundry to be starched.

First: Place clean clothing to be starched in washing machine and fill half full with warm water. This can be more clothing than you would normally add to a half load of wash, because we will not be trying to get clean, and concentrated is good. You may have to use the wash cycle to achieve warm water, but do so only until it sloshes, then shut it off until you finish the remaining steps.

Prepare starch water by bringing it to a boil.

Second: Bring a couple of quarts of water to a full boil.

Add one half-cup of starch to two cups of water and stir.
Add one half-cup of cornstarch to two cups of water and stir.

Third: Add one half-cup of cornstarch to two cups of water and stir until well-mixed and lump-free. “Lump Free” is important. Turn off heat under boiling water and slowly add starch mixture to boiled water, while stirring a lot. Keep stirring until it turns from white to a “cloudy-clear” color.

Rinse cycle for starch

Fourth: Pour contents of the pan onto the surface of the wash water and set for the last rinse cycle of the “gentle spin” choice. By using the last rinse cycle, you can close the lid and walk away from it, knowing it will not automatically do anything more to this load. By choosing “gentle spin” you keep more starch inside the clothing and not going down the drain.

Dry, starched shirts, ready to iron!

Fifth: Hang clothing to dry. Once dry, dampen slightly and iron. Don’t worry; at first the clothing will be stiff as a board, but as you iron, it will soften to just exactly perfect. You will SO love this!

Weekly Photo Challenge: Fresh

Do Get Fresh with Me!

fresh beet greens
Fresh Beet Greens

We grow these babies because they are so delicious steamed and buttered.

With a crop like this, we can make only about five meals, since they greatly reduce in volume while cooking.

These are the thinnings from a row planted too thickly, on purpose, to allow for this rare delicacy on our table. The rest will grow into regular beets and the tough tops will go to our chickens.

We’ll all be munching happily!

Four Fun Steps to Catch Up on Your Ironing

It takes guts to admit it: I’m behind on my ironing.

Old charcoal iron.I’ve posted about this 4-step process before and now, need to read it again, to help myself remember how easily we can catch up. So here goes!

4 How-To’s

  1. Hurry. That makes it go much faster. Time yourself and see how long it takes to iron one shirt or one pair of pants. Then see if you can cut the time down each time you repeat that performance. Play peppy music to help you stay quick.
  2. Set aside time to fire up your iron every day. If you have a designated spot for the ironing board, where you can leave it set up all the time, or if you have a board that is easily stored, such as in the wall or on a door, all the better.
  3. Iron twice what your family would wear, every day. This can only lead to success. They wear five pieces daily? You iron ten. Simple math leads to simple solutions.
  4. Continue until caught up. The finish line may seem elusive, but truthfully, it’s that other word just above–“CONTINUE”–that is a lost or hiding concept for us, especially when it comes to ironing. We feel foolish? We feel tired? We feel uninspired? We should consider how good it feels to have it all done for a change. Yes.

Now, with the goal of continuing, of not quitting, of actually being caught up instead of planning to catch up someday, here are some motivators I use, to keep me reaching for that last piece in the bottom of the basket:

4 Motivators

  1. The peppy music. Already mentioned, yes, this trick not only helps me move faster, it also keeps me cheery. Sometimes I even sing along, and it helps, like a daily, longed-for music session. Trust me.
  2. Multi-tasking. Need to make a phone call?–Turn down the music and turn on the speaker phone. Need to exercise?–Leg lifts, walking in place, or knee bends all work while ironing, and can be done in time to the music. Need to watch a pressure canner?–Iron in the kitchen. Need to study the next lesson in your online course?–Turn off the music and listen to the lecture.
    Get it?
  3. Rewards. Nothing like that last ice-cream bar in the freezer to make you get the job done. You cannot multi-task with ice-cream bars. You have to get ‘er done, then hit the ice! Another reward, for me, is seeing my hubs looking as sharp as can be when he leaves the house. Has to be good for his soul, too, I think. And sometimes I reward myself with a promise to spend time with my feet up, visiting with you, my readers. And then there is the newly-won space on the laundry room floor . . .
  4. Finally, being able to get dressed without first ironing, is a huge motivator. It is such a luxury, to me, who grew up ironing every morning and being late to catch the bus. Whew. So glad those days are over.

That’s it—so easy. For me, since only my husband wears much ironed clothes, if I iron two shirts and a pair of pants for him each day, soon all is done. Now and then I insert something for someone else, but really, most of us wear no-iron clothing like t-shirts, sweats, and the softer denims. It may take a week or two, but it does work.

Now, guess what I’m about to do!

Oh, and always remember: A job well-done need never be done again.

Right? That is right, isn’t it?

Free Spa Day!

Here’s how to get yourself a free spa day, local to you, wherever you live.

  1. Take the money you would have spent on paying a spa and use it to buy a really good push mower.
  2. Crank ‘er up on a warm, steamy day, like today.
  3. Go at it for at least a half hour.

Here’s what all is included in this package:

  1. Aerobic workout, coupled with weight training.
  2. Tanning session that’s safer than using a tanning bed.
  3. Ozone-treated sauna session.
  4. Cool shower. (Well, I assume you’ll go for that, just inside the door, right?)

Some precautions:

  1. If you burn easily, or if it’s your first-ever venture into the great outdoors for any length of time, use sunscreen.
  2. Wear a broad-brimmed straw hat, preferably one with vents in the crown. If your hands are tender, you might want to wear gloves, also.
  3. Wet a small towel, such as a hand towel, somewhat drippy, and double it, lengthwise, over the back of your neck. Wear this the entire time you are outdoors, as a sort of coolant.
  4. Take breaks every half hour. These breaks can include swapping out the washer/dryer, because you love multi-tasking. These breaks must include being in from the heat and using a fan to cool off a bit, drinking a huge glass of water that is not too icy, and resting in a seated position.
  5. You may want to limit how much you do the first time out, depending on your age, sun-sensitivity, and tolerance to exercise. Check up on all that are appropriate from this list: pulse, blood pressure, blood sugar, even temperature, if you’re not sure.

That’s it. It is such a great workout! Have FUN!

Overheard: Binding up a Broken Heart

Note: I did not overhear this in church, this time. I was too sick to go to church.
So I have taken the Scripture reference from what I know of the sermon and invented my own application to some of my recent life happenings.
If you have recently been disappointed in any huge thing, you will not like what follows. I did not like it. But it is truth; it has the power to liberate . . .

Plans fall through.

Disappointments happen.

It’s all a part of life and we all do all we can to prevent it. We use words such as if a lot, to remind each other of the fact that we don’t always get our own ways on every subject.

And usually we are okay with that. We use all sorts of philosophical gymnastics to assure ourselves we are okay with it. We wink and say things such as, if the creeks don’t rise, to remind everyone we do have limitations.

We have lots of limitations, in fact. Gravity is one. The number of hours of daylight is another. The inability to be in two places at once is still another. This could be a long list, much of it understood, much of it jokingly passed around as reminders of our mortality.

But sometimes we develop what we hope are immutable plans and think the fact that we want something badly, that it is very important to us, will make it happen.

If we are thwarted, we tend to come unglued. We’ve all seen this.

(Or have done it.)

Let’s take apart what is really happening, and try to learn from our mistakes.

First, a couple of passages from Scripture:

What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You want something but you don’t get it. You kill and covet but you cannot have what you want. You quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures. James 4:1-3

Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast and brag. All such boasting is evil. James 4:13-16

Okay, we’ll add a few verses I skipped, later, but examine these, above. How simply laid out it is! That “coming unglued” we see others do (or that we do ourselves) simply springs from the following:

  1. Not getting what we want.
  2. Not asking God.
  3. Having wrong motives.
  4. Forgetting we are mortal.
  5. Boasting and bragging.

1. When Self Does not Get What Self Wants

Oh, we’re supposed to set goals, be organized, have vision, etc., and if we are smart, we will always have some sort of “plan B” on the back burner, but really — we want what we want when we want it, don’t we? I mean, we firmly plant our hopes in our “A” plans, don’t we?

Our grandson recently celebrated his first birthday. A family tradition is to let the 1-year-old celebrator sort of investigate the cake at close range, while we take photos of facial changes as he samples his first ever smears of frosting. After a while, we rescue what is left of the cake, give him his own piece to finish decimating, and enjoy our own samples. Mmm!

This year, though, when we removed the confection for slicing, our grandson broke out in real tears of total disappointment, thinking those few samples would be all there was coming. Not until we laughingly handed him his own piece (while photographing the face at all times, of course) could he be comforted. He never guessed he’d get his own, couldn’t be expected to grasp that eating the whole thing was unthinkable.

And we can self-apply this easily, on a larger scale, I am sure.

2. When We Think We Know it Is Okay with God.
(But We Neglect to Ask)

When I teach a friend how to do home canning, I often lend things like jars and even a canner, making it less costly for  her, should she decide this is just not the way for her, and helping her see the expense will be worth it to buy her own, if she makes the choice to continue. One year, though, in such a situation, I came home to discover one of my students had been at my house and had helped herself to jars. Thinking she could not possibly wait to do another batch and feeling sure I would not mind, she had not waited to ask.

I minded.

The jars I lend are modern, flawless, regular canning jars. The jars she’d helped herself to were antique, family heirlooms made of gorgeous, thick, blue glass and having a nick or two, here and there.

And she learned, I hope: In the process, she broke a jar that had belonged to my husband’s grandmother. Her beans were ruined, being full of glass shards, and I was not happy with her, at all. I had been happy to lend, but not to find my property invaded and plundered and ruined in that way. And she was rather insulted when I suggest she buy some jars.

Self-apply this, to our relationship with our Heavenly Teacher.

3. When Our Motives Are Wrong

I think what comes to my mind most often, here, is the bad motive for marriage. How many young girls dream of marrying a doctor or lawyer or some other “rich” guy, especially if he’s tall, dark, and handsome? Why? Because it would be fun to be rich and famous or something? How many feel horribly disappointed when we don’t get that? How many feel horribly disappointed after we do get exactly that? Not too hard to see, is it? (Don’t get me wrong: Many handsome lawyers are also Godly men. It’s the wrong motive that can lead to disaster.)

And here, I insert a bit of the left-out Scripture:

Don’t you know that friendship with the world is hatred toward God? Anyone who chooses to be a friend of the world becomes an enemy of God. James 4:4

Well.

That certainly can explain a few things, can’t it. When we are God’s enemies, why should He help our lives along any?

4. When We Forget We Are Mortal

More important than forgetting we are mortal is the truth lying behind it: We think we are God. Oh, the grief we cause ourselves when we slide down this slope. Exists there any hope for recovery?

Let’s hope it.

Rather than list a bad example, here, I am going to relate an amazing example of doing this the right way:

David Wilkerson, a famous preacher in New York, had planned an enormous event involving many guest speakers to appear at his church the exact week of the bombing of the Twin Towers. (Only, no one on earth knew this was coming, yet.) (Well, few knew . . . )

But God knew.

And God put it into David Wilkerson’s heart to cancel the event. He could not explain why. He just knew when God was making His will undeniably clear, and he knew this was one of those times. So he obediently cancelled the event. This was a difficult decision, making him look idiotic, and not at all what he had envisioned; even hugely disappointing. Until . . .

. . . After the destruction fell upon us, there was David’s church, near the site, geared up for thousands who were not coming, (and who were protected from coming) praying to learn what God’s alternative plan might be, with no other agenda for days and days. They were totally prepared, without even knowing it, to be God’s hands and feet of mercy, care, sustenance, and assistance.

It gives me goose bumps and tears, even now, to think of it, of what he risked to do God’s will, and what he gained in return. I want to be like that, with God, and not bombastic like those who think they are God.

5. When We Boast and Brag

Boasting in ourselves is evil. We should never boast in anything but the wondrous work Christ Jesus had done in us, through us, with us, and for us. His death, His gifting us with Life, His empowering us to do anything right, His paving the way, His leading and teaching us, and many other things from Him are the only things we can claim of any worth. He did it all; he does it all. And really, that’s all that matters. Then, if He wills, we will live another day, and carry on.

Do you believe that?

It Was Timely! It Was Timely!

Do all things work together or not!

The child is ill. Still picking at his food, although whatever goes down stays down, which is improvement. He has moments of normal temp and then moments of a bit of fever.

However.

Had he not been at home with an adult to supervise him, we would not have discovered a big discovery:

Today the air conditioner decided to drip onto the kitchen floor, through the kitchen ceiling.

It was timely.

Yes.

I’ve told him he saved the day, just by being sick.

He is feeling better about missing out on all the excitement.

And it all works together when Someone big enough has the reins.

Yes.
